Certificate of origin: when you need one and which type

Non-preferential vs preferential origin, EUR.1, GAFTA and origin declarations explained simply.

4 min read

Two kinds of origin proof

A non-preferential certificate of origin simply states where goods were made — some buyers, banks or countries ask for it.

A preferential proof (EUR.1, GAFTA certificate, origin statement on the invoice) lets the buyer pay lower or zero duty under a trade agreement.

Who issues it

Chambers of commerce usually issue non-preferential certificates. Preferential proofs are issued by customs or a chamber, or written by an approved exporter on the invoice, depending on the agreement.

Get it right

The goods description, HS code and quantities must match the invoice exactly, and the goods must truly meet the agreement's rules of origin.
