Selling online across borders: duties for e-commerce sellers

DDP vs DAP, de minimis thresholds, VAT on small parcels and how to avoid refused deliveries.

6 min read

Who pays at the door

With DAP the customer pays duty and VAT on delivery — many refuse the parcel. With DDP you collect those costs at checkout and pay them yourself, which gives a better customer experience.

Low-value thresholds

Many countries exempt small parcels from duty (the de minimis value), but VAT often still applies — the EU charges VAT from the first euro through IOSS. Thresholds change, so check them for each market.

Stock in the market

When volumes grow, importing in bulk to a warehouse in the destination usually costs less per unit than shipping parcels one by one.
